In 2018 we were commissioned by Qantas to create a unique sonic experience for their passengers to be played during boarding, disembarkation and on the home menu of the inflight entertainment system. As passengers would be hearing the music for extended periods and more than once during the flight experience, the Qantas team decided on creating a long-form musical work.
The primary goal of the piece was to capture the spirit of Qantas as well as being an evocative journey in its own right, balancing the need for calm with a sense of excitement and wonder. The music had to be a journey within itself and be able to stand the test of time with repeated listening by frequent travellers.
Finding the exact style and tone was a wonderful challenge for us. We wanted the piece to feel ‘Australian’, but at the same time have an international sophistication. We settled on a varied palette that included acoustic, electric and slide guitar, balanced against some hybrid electronic elements and a 50 piece string section. The final piece was an ever-evolving fourteen-minute through-composed work. We also created a secondary more uptempo variation with a fresh instrumental palette.
The passengers are our barometer for success and we have been overwhelmed by the response. Here are just a few of the expressions of appreciation the music has received:
“Absolutely love this music. Qantas will forever be my favourite airline.”
“I’ve been looking everywhere for this tune, it has many great memories attached to it.”
“Every time I get stressed before takeoff I always listen to this.”
“Thank you so much! I am over the moon that I just found this! I love Qantas! My favourite airline and the best airline.”
“This makes me cry.”
“Oh my God, this music is so memorable. Accompanying during the long flight to and from Australia.”
“I am so addicted to this music – 18 hrs across the Pacific a few weeks ago as I slept. Love #qantas.”
We have worked on many brand spots for Qantas over the years, and as part of the relaunch of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, we did a version of the Buddy Holly song ‘Everyday’. We undertook a process of finding a unique indie artist to create an original raw performance which underpins the emotive nature of the spot.
We were part of one of the most iconic advertising campaigns ever done out of Australia when we recorded and arranged ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ with the Australian Girls Choir and National Boys Choir.
